BOX Project Space
03.06 - 11.07.2021

Aslı Özdemir takes a literal and metaphorical journey into the image of her mother as a young woman for her exhibition "mädchenname" in the BOX project space of the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main. By re-illuminating and reversing the perspectival image axis of old photographs, Özdemir draws attention to the materiality of the photograph itself and the period of time it contains. In another articulation of this photo series, Özdemir reassembles old photographs in the surroundings of her mother's house, intertwining past and present through the daughter's gaze and the mother's absent presence. Taking advantage of the specific architecture of the glass foyer, semi-transparent images placed on the windows expose the exhibition to passers-by, creating a tension between what is inside and what is outside, front or back. The rays of light, so essential to the process of photography, become an instrument here to reinterpret and reactivate the printed images.

About the BOX exhibition space: Since autumn 2020, the glass foyer in the castle has been an exhibition space for HfG students. BOX is organised by Prof. Martin Liebscher and curated by Ben Livne-Weitzman.
